The Prairie Baseball Academy ended on a high note at Lloyd Nolan Yard over the weekend going undefeated during the Keith Jorgensen Memorial Baseball tournament. PBA's perfect weekend record wise on the diamond gave head coach Todd Hubka a great glance at what the team will need to work on over the upcoming winter months heading into the 2026 Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC) season. "This fall is no different then any other fall in all the years I've been doing this. We always have to get bigger and stronger. The weight room is going to be their second home." said Hubka.
The 'Dawgs finished the 2024 CCBC season with a record of 14-15 and look to improve on a season that was out of character for the PBA who is normally in the top 2-3 teams in the league. "We weren't healthy last season from the fall on and our record last year was a reflection of that. Not being healthy early in the season just just wore down the team especially our pitching staff" lamented Hubka.
PBA has 13 players returning from last years team including CCBC Rookie of the Year and League MVP Owen Lucas who had himself an outstanding fall ball season. Coach Hubka thinks that with a year of college baseball under his belt Lucas can take another step in his baseball journey. "Owen is such an athletic kid who works hard so he is only going to get better. The coaches have already noticed an improvement with his footwork on the infield from last season and he has also become a smarter player too. He seems to have worked hard over the summer and put on some extra muscle that can't hurt him either." said Hubka
Now the real work begins for the players as they begin their inter squad World Series that's always highly competitive and can give players bragging rights during the winter months while they train for the 2025 spring season. Hubka's enthusiasm for the PBA season grows every year when their World Series approaches, "The kids have a lot of fun playing but it is the competing that I really like to see from the players. And every year a player or two comes out of nowhere and earns themselves a spot on the varsity team out of nowhere, it's like "where the heck was this guy all fall""
PBA is once again hosting the Canadian College World Series at Spitz Stadium from May 15-19th, 2025.
